Wrist Angle and Floating Hands
Between your forearm and your hand there is a joint with two independent angles, and both of them are usually decided by accident. The first is how far the hand tilts up or down relative to the forearm. The second is how far it turns left or right, toward the thumb or toward the little finger. Neither angle is something most people have ever chosen deliberately, and both of them change how far your fingers can reach without the hand moving.
This page is about the mechanics of those angles and about the three things a hand can do while typing — rest, float, or plant — which are commonly treated as one thing and are not. The practical summary is that a flatter forearm-to-hand angle gives the fingers more usable range, that floating gives more precision than planting, and that a wrist rest is for the pauses rather than the typing.
The two angles, named
Extension and flexion are the up-and-down pair. Extension is the hand tilting upward so the knuckles rise toward the forearm's top line; flexion is the opposite, the hand dropping so the palm folds toward the inner forearm. Most keyboards sit above desk height and most people rest their forearms lower than their hands, so extension is the far more common of the two while typing.
Deviation is the side-to-side pair. Radial deviation is the hand angling toward the thumb, ulnar deviation is angling toward the little finger. Because a standard keyboard's key columns run straight while your forearms converge toward the centre of your body, both hands sit in some ulnar deviation by default, and the wider your shoulders the more of it there is.
Those four words are worth knowing because they name what changes when you tilt a keyboard, add a rest, or split the board — and because most descriptions of keyboard setup use them without defining them.
Why extension shortens your reach
The finger tendons that flex your fingers run through the wrist. When the wrist is held in extension, those tendons are already partly taken up before the fingers do anything, which means a finger has less remaining range before it runs out of comfortable movement.
The practical effect is on the longest reaches. Curling the little finger down to Z, or extending the index finger up to the number row, is a movement near the end of that finger's range already; starting from an extended wrist eats into what is left. That is why a hand held at a steep angle tends to move as a unit for those keys rather than reaching with the finger alone, and why the resulting position is harder to return from.
The practical response is to reduce the angle rather than to fight it: bring the keyboard closer to the height of your forearms so the hands are roughly in line with them, rather than tilting the hands up to meet a keyboard that sits above them. The negative tilt that looks upside down
Almost every keyboard has feet on the back edge that raise the far side, and almost everyone flips them out, because the keyboard then looks like it is facing you. The feet exist for a legibility reason from the era when typists read the key legends, and raising the back edge increases wrist extension for exactly the reason above.
Tilting the other way — the far edge lower than the near edge, sometimes called negative tilt — flattens the forearm-to-hand angle instead. It looks wrong and it makes the key legends harder to read, which is one reason it is unpopular and another reason it matters less to a touch typist than to anyone else: if you are not reading the keys, their legibility costs you nothing.
You do not need special hardware to try it. Leaving the feet folded flat is already closer to neutral than raising them, and that costs nothing to test for a week.
Rest, float, plant: three different things
Floating means the hands are supported by the forearms and shoulders, hovering over the keys, moving freely in all directions. Resting means the wrists or the heels of the palms contact a surface but the hand still moves. Planting means the wrist is pressed into a surface and stays there, so the hand pivots around it.
Floating gives the most range and the most precise long reaches, because nothing anchors the hand and every finger reach can be assisted by a small hand movement. It also asks the most of the shoulders, which is why it fades first when you are tired.
Planting gives the least. With the wrist fixed, a reach to a distant key rotates the whole hand around that point, dragging the other fingers off their keys on the way. This is the mechanical explanation for a common complaint: that one half of the keyboard feels further away than the other. With a planted wrist it genuinely is, because the arc is not symmetric.
Resting sits between the two and is what most people actually do most of the time, alternating into a float for the awkward reaches. That is a reasonable way to work, provided the alternation happens — the failure mode is resting so heavily that it becomes planting without you noticing.
What a wrist rest is for
A wrist rest is a pause surface. It is there for the moments between bursts of typing — while you read, think, or wait — and using it that way is what it is designed for.
Using it as a support during typing turns resting into planting, with the pivot problem described above. It also concentrates contact on a small area of the wrist, which is precisely the part of the arrangement you would least want to load.
Height matters more than material. A rest that sits well below the keyboard's front edge pushes the hands into extension to reach the keys, which is the angle you were trying to reduce. Roughly level with the front edge of the keyboard is a sensible target, and a rest that is too tall is a more common mistake than one that is too short. Palm rests, which support the heel of the hand rather than the wrist itself, sidestep some of this by moving the contact point away from the joint.
Where deviation comes from, and what actually reduces it
Ulnar deviation is a geometry problem, not a posture problem: your forearms converge and the keyboard's columns do not. Telling someone to straighten their wrists does not fix this, because the only way to straighten them on a conventional board is to move the elbows out.
The things that genuinely change it are all hardware. Splitting the board is the direct fix, since two halves can sit in front of two forearms and nothing then has to bend to close a gap; tenting addresses a further axis again, the forearm rotation a flat slab imposes on you. Checking your own angles without equipment
Sit as you normally do and start typing something ordinary. After a minute, freeze and look at your hands from the side and then from above, without adjusting them first — the adjusted version tells you nothing.
From the side, you want the back of the hand roughly continuous with the forearm. A visible step upward at the wrist is extension; a visible fold is flexion. From above, you want the middle finger roughly in line with the forearm. If the hand is angled outward toward the little finger, that is the ulnar deviation that a split board addresses and a conventional board does not.
Do the same check twenty minutes into a session, because the interesting version is the tired one. Angles that are fine when you sit down and drift as the shoulders fatigue tell you something a single snapshot cannot, and they are a reason to think about session length as much as setup — which is the subject of warming up and taking breaks.
