Ortholinear and Split Keyboards

These two are almost always discussed together, sold together and adopted together, and they are answers to entirely different problems. Conflating them means people take on two adaptations at once when one would have solved what was bothering them.

Ortholinear is about the columns. A standard keyboard staggers its rows diagonally, so a finger reaching up or down also travels sideways. Ortholinear removes that, putting each finger's keys in a straight vertical line.

Split is about the hands. A standard keyboard is one rectangle, so both forearms converge to reach it and both wrists angle outward. Splitting lets each half sit in front of its own shoulder.

Either can be adopted without the other, and knowing which problem you have determines which is worth the disruption.

Where the diagonal stagger comes from

The offset between rows is not a design decision anyone made for typing. On a mechanical typewriter each key drove a metal typebar, and the bars had to reach a single printing point without colliding, which required the key levers to be arranged in offset rows. The stagger is the shape of that linkage, preserved in a device that has had no levers for decades.

Every keyboard you have used inherits it, including the one on your laptop, and the consequence is that no finger moves in a straight line. The left index finger reaching from F up to R travels up and slightly left; the same finger reaching down to V travels down and slightly left again, by a different amount. Each finger has its own set of small diagonal corrections, and you learned all of them without knowing it.

Ortholinear removes those corrections. Whether that is worth relearning depends on how much you believe the corrections cost, which is genuinely hard to measure. What the typewriter left behind, and which parts still cost something, is argued in what the typewriter left behind.

What ortholinear actually feels like

The adaptation is smaller than people expect for most keys and larger than expected for a few.

The home row is unchanged, so nothing about resting position differs. Most upward and downward reaches feel immediately more natural, because the finger moves the way it wants to. The transition for those is days rather than weeks.

The trouble is concentrated on the bottom row, especially the left hand. On a staggered board the bottom row is offset far enough that C sits comfortably under the middle finger's downward path; on an ortholinear board the columns are straight and several bottom-row keys end up somewhere your hands do not expect. Reports of a long adjustment almost always turn out to be about the bottom row.

The honest expectation is a quick adaptation for two-thirds of the board and a stubborn one for the rest, followed by a keyboard that feels better and produces speed roughly where it was before.

What splitting solves that nothing else can

Ulnar deviation — the hand angling outward toward the little finger — is a geometry problem rather than a posture one. Your forearms converge toward your body and the keyboard's columns run straight, so the wrists must bend to reconcile the two. No amount of concentration fixes this, because there is nothing to fix: it is the only way to meet a single rectangle with two arms.

Splitting removes the conflict by removing the constraint. Each half sits directly in front of its own forearm, at whatever separation your shoulders want, and the wrists no longer have to bend to close a gap.

This is the single most defensible claim in the whole alternative-hardware space, because it is a direct geometric consequence rather than an inferred benefit. It is also why splitting is worth considering before any letter rearrangement: a layout change cannot affect wrist angle at all, whereas this addresses it directly. Tenting, which is a third thing again

A flat keyboard requires your forearms to rotate so the palms face down. That rotation is not free, and it is a separate axis from both the stagger and the split.

Tenting raises the inner edge of each half so the thumbs sit higher than the little fingers, letting the hands rest closer to the position they take when you simply hold them out — which is not palms-down but angled inward.

Most split boards support some tenting and many people adopt it gradually, starting flat and increasing the angle over weeks. A steep angle from the first day tends to feel unstable because you have no established sense of where the keys are at that orientation.

Worth noting that tenting requires splitting: you cannot tent a single board without lifting one side of the whole thing, which raises one hand relative to the other. That dependency is part of why the two get discussed together, even though splitting alone is perfectly coherent.

The thumb question

Most split ergonomic boards move several keys under the thumbs, and this is a larger change than either the stagger or the split.

On a standard keyboard your thumbs press the space bar. That is one key, for two of the strongest and most dextrous digits on your hands, while the little fingers — the weakest — carry shift, control, enter, backspace, the brackets and the quotes. Stated that way the arrangement is obviously backwards, and it is another typewriter inheritance rather than a decision.

Thumb clusters redistribute that load, typically moving shift, backspace, enter and a layer key under the thumbs. The relief to the little fingers is substantial and is what most long-term users cite as the biggest single benefit of the whole category.

The cost is that it is the least transferable change on this page. Split geometry still feels like typing on any keyboard; thumb keys do not exist anywhere else, so every other keyboard becomes noticeably worse to use.

Which to try, in what order

Diagnose before adopting. If your complaint is that your wrists angle outward, split geometry addresses it directly and ortholinear does nothing for it. If your complaint is that certain reaches feel awkward and imprecise, ortholinear addresses that and splitting does not. If your little fingers are doing too much, thumb keys are the answer and neither of the others helps much.

If nothing in particular is wrong, the honest advice is to change nothing. These boards are expensive, the adaptation is real, and none of them will make you faster — the case is comfort, and comfort improvements are only worth their cost when there is discomfort to improve.

And exhaust the free options first. Keyboard height, chair height, screen distance and whether you look at the keys are all adjustable at no cost and all matter more than the shape of the board.
