Keyboard Sizes Explained
Keyboard sizes are almost always described by what they keep — a hundred and four keys, eighty-seven keys, sixty-eight keys — which is the least useful way to think about them. What matters is what each size removes, and whether you use the things it removed.
That second question is harder than it sounds, because people are unreliable narrators about their own key usage. Almost everyone believes they use the function row more than they do, and almost everyone underestimates how often they press an arrow key. The honest way to decide is to find out rather than to introspect.

Full-size, and the thing on the right

Tenkeyless: the default recommendation, and why
Remove the number pad and you have tenkeyless, usually written TKL. Everything else is unchanged — function row, navigation cluster, full arrows — so nothing needs relearning and nothing moves to a layer.
This is the size most often recommended to people who are not sure, and the reasoning is straightforward: it removes the one block most people genuinely do not use, brings the mouse substantially closer, and costs nothing in adaptation. There is no learning curve at all.
The case against it is narrow and specific. If you enter numbers in any volume, the pad is worth the desk space and the mouse distance. Note also that a standalone numeric pad, sat to the left of the board, is a real option almost nobody weighs. It supplies the pad when the work calls for it, leaves the mouse where a tenkeyless board puts it, and occupies the free hand rather than the busy one — which for most people who need both is a better arrangement than a full-size keyboard.
75% and 65%: where layers begin
Below tenkeyless the compromises start, and they take the form of layers — keys that exist only while a modifier is held.
A 75% board keeps the function row and the arrows but compresses the navigation cluster, usually stacking it into a single right-hand column. Nothing has left the keyboard; things have moved, and the adaptation is a matter of days.
A 65% board removes the function row entirely, putting F1 through F12 on a layer, while keeping dedicated arrow keys. This is the first size where something genuinely goes away, and whether that matters depends on your applications. Function keys are rare in prose work and constant in some editors, spreadsheets and games.
The general principle at this end is that a layered key is not a missing key but it is a slower key, and one you will not use as readily. If a function you use frequently ends up on a layer, you will find yourself using it less — which is a real cost even though the key is technically still available.
60% and the arrow key question
A 60% board is the alphabetic block, the modifiers and nothing else. No function row, no navigation cluster, and — the significant one — no dedicated arrow keys.
Arrows are the reason this size divides people so sharply. They are pressed constantly by almost everyone, usually without noticing, and on a 60% they live on a layer: hold a modifier and use four letter keys as a cursor cluster. Once learned, that arrangement is genuinely quicker than reaching to a corner, because the arrows are now under your fingers rather than an arm movement away.
The cost is that it must be learned, that it does not transfer to any other keyboard, and that it fails on a machine that is not yours. It also interacts badly with applications that use those modifiers for their own purposes.
The honest summary is that a 60% is excellent for someone who commits to it and permanently mildly annoying for someone who does not. There is no version of this size that works without adaptation.
Finding out what you actually use
Introspection is unreliable here, and there is a cheaper way: cover the keys you are considering removing and use the keyboard normally for a week.
Tape over the number pad if you are considering tenkeyless. Cover the function row for 65%. Cover the arrows for 60%. What you discover is not how often you meant to use them but how often you reach for them, which is the number that matters and is usually a surprise in one direction or the other.
A week is enough. If you never reached for the block, the size below is safe. If you reached constantly and were annoyed, you have your answer at a cost of some tape.
This matters more than the usual advice about desk space, because a keyboard you find mildly irritating is one you will replace, and the second purchase costs considerably more than the tape did.
What size does not fix
Worth stating plainly, because size is the most-discussed keyboard property and one of the less consequential ones.
A smaller board brings the mouse closer, which reduces how far the right arm reaches. That is a real benefit and it is essentially the whole list.
What it does not do is change the diagonal column stagger, which is a typewriter survival and means no finger moves in a straight line. It does not change the fact that both forearms converge to meet one flat rectangle. It does not change how far the number row is from home. And it does not change your typing at all. Nothing about removing a number pad makes you faster or more accurate on the letters, and any claim otherwise is about desk ergonomics wearing a performance costume.
