Keycap Profiles and Materials
Keycaps are the only part of a keyboard your fingers ever touch. Every discussion of switches, layouts and geometry is ultimately about what happens underneath a surface you never make contact with, and the surface itself gets treated as decoration.
It is not only decoration. Profile decides the height and dish of each row, which changes how far your fingers travel and how well a fingertip locates the centre of a key without looking. Material decides friction and how the surface changes over months of use. Both affect accuracy more than they get credit for, and neither appears in any specification you would think to compare.

Sculpted versus uniform, which is the real division
Profiles split into two families before any brand name matters.
Sculpted profiles give each row a different height and angle, so the board forms a shallow bowl that curves up toward the far row and toward you at the near one. The intent is that each row meets the finger at roughly the angle that finger arrives at, which means the top row is tilted toward you and the bottom row away.
Uniform profiles make every key identical. Nothing distinguishes one row from another by feel, and the board is a flat plane rather than a bowl.
For a touch typist the sculpted family has a specific advantage that has nothing to do with comfort: the rows feel different, which means your fingers get positional information from the shape of the key they land on. On a uniform set, a hand that has drifted upward feels exactly the same as a hand that has not, and the drift described in hand position and the home row becomes harder to notice without looking.
Dish, and why the home row is different
Most keycaps are dished — the top surface is slightly concave, so the fingertip settles toward the centre rather than sliding off an edge.
The depth of that dish varies substantially between profiles, and it does a job that is easy to miss: a deeper dish gives more tolerance for imprecise landings, because a fingertip that arrives near the edge is guided inward. A flat or shallow cap gives no such correction, so a near-miss stays a near-miss.
That matters most on the keys you land on repeatedly from a distance — the reaches rather than the home row — and it is a plausible part of why some people find one profile noticeably more accurate for them than another.
Separately, the home row keys F and J carry a raised bump or a deeper scoop on almost every set, and the form of that marker varies more than people expect. Some are barely perceptible. If you rely on finding home by feel, and every touch typist should, it is worth checking that a set's markers are ones you can actually locate.
ABS and PBT: the practical difference is shine
Two plastics dominate. ABS is cheaper to mould, takes sharp legends and vivid colours well, and develops a smooth glossy patch where your fingers land — usually within months on the most-used keys.
PBT is harder, more textured, and resists that polishing for far longer. It also tends to have a slightly duller sound and a drier feel.
The difference that actually matters for typing is the shine, and not for cosmetic reasons. A polished cap is more slippery than a textured one, and the keys that polish first are the ones your fingers hit most — so the surfaces you rely on most become the least grippy. Whether that changes your accuracy is hard to establish, but it is a real change in the interface, arriving gradually enough that you are unlikely to attribute anything to it.
PBT is the better default for a board you intend to keep. ABS is not a mistake, particularly for a set you like the look of, and the shine takes long enough to arrive that it is a slow cost rather than an immediate one.
How legends are made, and why it matters
Printed legends sit on the surface and wear off. On a heavily used key that can happen within a year, and it happens first on exactly the keys you press most.
Doubleshot legends are moulded from a second piece of plastic that runs through the cap, so the character is part of the structure rather than a coating. They cannot wear off because there is nothing on the surface to remove. Dye-sublimated legends sit within the plastic rather than on it and are similarly durable.
For a touch typist this is less consequential than it sounds — you are not reading the keys — but it matters for two reasons. Blank keys are unhelpful to anyone else using your machine, and they are unhelpful to you for the rarely used keys that even fluent typists look up occasionally. A board whose common letters have worn blank while its symbols remain crisp is exactly the wrong way round.
Height, and the thing it changes about your setup
Profiles differ substantially in overall height, and the taller ones raise the whole typing surface by a meaningful amount.
That matters because keyboard height determines the angle between your forearm and your hand, and a taller keycap set has the same effect as putting the keyboard on a slightly thicker surface. If your setup was already close to neutral, a tall profile can push it into the extension described in wrist angle and floating hands.
Low-profile sets do the reverse and are worth considering if your desk is fixed and slightly too high, which is common.
The practical note is simply that keycaps are part of your setup geometry rather than a cosmetic layer on top of it, and a set that changes the height by several millimetres deserves the same attention you would give to changing the desk.
What is taste, and what to ignore
Beyond the above, most keycap discussion is aesthetics, and there is nothing wrong with that — a keyboard you like looking at is a small reliable pleasure, and it is a legitimate reason to buy something.
Sound is largely aesthetic too, and largely not about the caps: the case, the mounting, the switches and any internal foam do more to shape it than the plastic on top. Attributing a board's sound signature primarily to its keycaps is a common misattribution.
Thickness gets discussed extensively and affects sound more than feel. A thicker cap sounds deeper and does not meaningfully change what your fingertip experiences.
And the thing genuinely worth ignoring is the idea that any of this makes you faster. Profile can help you locate keys and dish can forgive an imprecise landing, both of which support accuracy at the margin. Nothing here moves a speed figure, and a set chosen because you like it is a better outcome than a set chosen from a specification.
