What Competitive Typists Actually Practise

The assumption about high-level typing practice is that it is the ordinary kind with more of it: longer sessions, more passages, more tests. That is roughly the opposite of what the fastest typists actually do, and the difference is instructive for anyone stuck at a plateau.

Competitive practice looks much more like music practice than like typing practice as it is usually presented. Short repeated fragments. Deliberate constraint. Analysis at the level of individual transitions rather than whole texts. Long stretches spent below performance speed on purpose.

None of that requires any interest in competition to be useful, and most of it is available on any typing site. It is simply not what the format encourages, because a site built around taking tests naturally encourages taking more tests.

Passages are the measurement, not the practice

The first thing that separates competitive practice from ordinary practice is what happens between attempts.

An ordinary typist takes a test, sees a number, and takes another test. That is a measurement repeated, and repeated measurement of an unchanged system produces the same result with noise around it — which is exactly the experience people describe when they say practice stopped working.

A competitive typist takes a test and then examines what went wrong inside it. Which words were slow. Which transitions produced a hesitation. Whether the slow parts cluster on a particular finger or a particular pair. Then they practise those specific things and re-measure.

The passage's role is diagnostic. It tells you where the problem is; it does not fix the problem, and running it again mostly re-tells you. This is the same reasoning behind the session structure in how to structure typing practice: one measurement, then targeted work, then one measurement.

The unit of practice is a fragment

What gets practised is short. A single word, a two-letter transition, a three-character ending — repeated many times, well past the point where it feels interesting.

The reason is repetition density. Practising on passages gives you each awkward transition once every few hundred characters, which is far too sparse to consolidate anything. Practising the transition directly gives you it every time, which is why a few minutes of concentrated work on one pattern outperforms an hour of general typing for that pattern.

This is exactly what the drills here are for, and it is the part of the site that most closely resembles how fast typists actually train. The specific ones that come up most in competitive contexts are the mechanical bigram categories — same-finger pairs, which cannot be overlapped and must be mitigated rather than fixed, and adjacent-finger rolls, which are the fastest sequences a hand can produce and are worth being able to recognise.

The boredom is not incidental. A fragment repeated to automaticity is dull by construction, and tolerating that is a large part of what separates people who improve from people who plateau.

Deliberate slowness, on purpose, at length

Fast typists spend a substantial proportion of their practice below their performance speed, which surprises people.

The reason is that speed practised with errors reinforces the imprecise version of a movement. To change a motor pattern you have to execute the new version correctly, repeatedly, which requires going slowly enough to be correct — and then letting speed return on its own rather than forcing it.

This is the same principle as practising a musical passage under tempo, and it is unpopular for the same reason: it feels like not practising. The alternative — running at full speed with a background error rate — is what most people do, and it consolidates whatever they are currently doing rather than improving it.

The site's version of this is the zero-error accuracy drill, where a clean run is the only success condition and pace is not measured at all. It is the least popular kind of practice and one of the most effective.

Constraint as a training tool

A recurring competitive technique is to make the task artificially harder in one specific way, so that the thing being trained cannot be avoided.

Removing correction is the clearest example. With backspace unavailable, you cannot type fast and repair; you have to type correctly, and the pace at which that is possible is the pace you discover. The no-backspace test and One Life are both versions of this, the second more extreme, where a single wrong character ends the run.

Requiring immediate correction is the mirror image: accuracy mode will not let you past a mistake, which converts error rate directly into elapsed time and makes it impossible to ignore.

And enforced pace — a rolling minimum that rises until you fall below it, as in Speed Gate — finds the exact speed at which you stop being able to keep up, which is a more precise answer than a best-of figure.

Each constraint isolates one variable by removing the usual escape route, which is the entire point.

Rhythm gets more attention than speed

Something that appears constantly in high-level discussion and almost never in beginner material is the evenness of the intervals between keystrokes.

Two typists averaging the same speed can have completely different distributions: one producing steady intervals, the other producing fast bursts separated by stalls at the same predictable places. The burst typist has a much lower ceiling, because their fast sections are already near the maximum rate a hand can produce and all the remaining time sits in the stalls.

Competitive practice attacks the stalls, which means finding them first — usually specific bigrams or rare letters — and then working them individually until the profile flattens. General speed work polishes the sections that were never the problem and never touches the ones that were.

The steady rhythm drill trains the intervals directly, and burst and pause trains the complementary skill of deliberately exceeding sustainable pace, which raises the ceiling that steady work then fills in. Confusing those two is one of the more common reasons a plateau persists.

What transfers to ordinary typing

Most of it, which is the point of the post. Almost nothing in the list above is specific to competition.

Analyse rather than repeat: look at which keys and transitions cost you rather than at the headline figure. Practise fragments rather than passages, because repetition density is what consolidates a pattern. Spend time below performance speed deliberately. Use constraints to isolate a variable. Work on the gaps between keystrokes, not only the keystrokes.

What does not transfer is the volume. Competitive typists practise a great deal, and for someone whose interest in typing is instrumental that is neither necessary nor sensible — fifteen minutes a day structured this way does more than an hour structured the usual way.
