This drill isn't measuring the keystrokes — it's measuring the gaps between them. Two typists can produce the same average speed on the same passage while one of them arrives at that average through short, even intervals and the other lurches between quick bursts and stalls. Only one of those two is actually steady, and a plain WPM number can't tell them apart.

The word list here is deliberately the easiest on the entire site — the, and, for, you, are, not, but, all — short, extremely familiar words with nothing awkward in any of them. That's not a lower difficulty setting; it's a control. With no hard reach or unusual spelling to blame for a hitch, whatever unevenness shows up in the timing has nowhere to hide behind the words themselves.

Why This Drill

A typist who covers a passage in short bursts followed by stalls, and another who covers the identical passage at one steady pace throughout, can post the same final WPM — but only the steady one is producing a result that holds up under sustained typing, since a rhythm built on stalls has nowhere further to smooth out and a rhythm built on evenness has room to speed up as a whole rather than deepening its own unevenness.

Because this drill's words are all common and easy, any raggedness that does show up can be attributed to rhythm habit rather than word difficulty — which isn't true of ordinary prose, where an unfamiliar word or an awkward letter combination gives a legitimate reason for the hand to slow down briefly.
