Shortcuts Are the Other Half of Speed

Watch someone work for an hour and count how much of it is continuous typing. For most knowledge work the answer is a surprisingly small fraction — and the rest is navigation. Moving the cursor. Switching windows. Finding a file. Selecting a paragraph. Jumping to a line. Going back to the thing you were just looking at.
All of that is keyboard work, none of it is typing, and almost nobody practises it. Meanwhile people spend months trying to raise a words-per-minute figure that governs the smaller half of their keyboard time.
The argument here is not that typing speed does not matter. It is that a typist at ninety words a minute who reaches for the mouse between every paragraph is slower in practice than one at sixty who never leaves the keyboard, and that the second person got there far more cheaply.
The mouse round trip is bigger than it looks
Reaching for a mouse is not one action. Your hand leaves home position, travels, acquires the mouse, aims, clicks, travels back, and then has to re-find the keys — which takes a moment even for a fluent typist, and longer for one who then glances down to check.
Call the whole cycle a second or two. That sounds trivial until you count how often it happens: for most people, several times a minute during editing work. It is one of the largest repeated costs in a working day, and it is invisible because each instance is too small to notice.
The re-finding is the part people underestimate. The travel is obvious; the position recovery afterwards is not, and it is why keeping both hands on the keys is worth more than the raw movement time suggests. The shortcuts that are worth the most are not the famous ones
Everybody knows copy, cut and paste. Those are not where the time is, because they replace a menu interaction that is already rare.
The expensive interactions are the ones that happen constantly and quietly. Moving the cursor by word instead of by character. Selecting to the end of a line. Deleting a whole word rather than backspacing over it letter by letter. Jumping to the start or end of a line, or of a document. Switching between the last two windows. Undoing more than once and then redoing.
Each of these replaces a sequence — several arrow presses, or a mouse selection — with one action, and each is used dozens of times an hour by anyone editing text.
The useful exercise is to notice, once, what you do most often that takes more than one action. That is your list. It will be short, it will be personal, and learning five of them is worth more than learning fifty generic ones you will never use.
Why nobody learns them
The learning curve is shaped badly, and it is worth naming why rather than treating it as laziness.
A shortcut is slower the first twenty times you use it, because you have to remember it, and remembering interrupts the task you were doing. The mouse is available immediately and requires no recall. So at every individual moment, the mouse is the faster choice — and the shortcut only wins after an investment that each individual moment gives you no reason to make.
That is precisely the structure that produces the glance-down habit in typing, and it fails for the same reason: locally optimal, globally expensive, with the cost invisible from inside the habit. The mechanism is the same one described in why not looking at the keys works.
Which suggests the same remedy. Not willpower, but removing the easy option temporarily — moving the mouse out of reach for an hour is the direct equivalent of covering the keyboard, and it works for the same reason.
Learn five, not fifty
The standard failure is to find a list of ninety shortcuts for an application, attempt to memorise it, retain four, and conclude that shortcuts do not stick.
They do stick; ninety at once does not. Motor memory for a key combination forms the same way it forms for a letter — through repeated use in context, not through study — and you cannot use ninety things frequently enough for any of them to consolidate.
Five is the right number, and the five should be chosen from what you actually do rather than from what a list recommends. Use them exclusively for a week, deliberately and slowly, accepting that you will be slower. Then add five more.
This is the same principle that makes the drills here work: narrow, concentrated repetition beats broad exposure, because consolidation needs density rather than coverage. A shortcut used forty times in a week is learned; one used twice is not.
The keys that never should have needed a mouse
Some navigation problems are not shortcut problems but layout ones, and it is worth separating them.
If your arrow keys are a long reach away in a corner, cursor movement is expensive regardless of what you know, and that is a hardware situation rather than a knowledge one. It is a large part of why compact keyboards put arrows on a layer under the fingers — which sounds like a compromise and is often quicker, as keyboard sizes explained discusses.
Similarly, if the modifiers you need most are pressed by a little finger already carrying shift, control, tab and enter, then the shortcut is available and awkward. That is the load-distribution problem that thumb clusters address.
So when a shortcut you know keeps losing to the mouse, ask whether it is genuinely a habit problem. Sometimes the keys are simply in bad places, and the answer is to move them rather than to try harder.
What this is worth compared to typing practice

Raising your typing speed from sixty to seventy-five words a minute is a substantial project — months of structured practice, and for most people a plateau or two along the way. It improves the smaller fraction of your keyboard time by twenty-five percent.
Learning five navigation shortcuts takes a week of mild inconvenience and improves the larger fraction by considerably more than that, because it is replacing multi-action sequences with single ones rather than making a single action faster.
I do not think this means typing practice is a waste — the practice path exists on this site for good reason, and being unable to type without looking is a genuine ceiling on everything. But once you can type without looking at a comfortable speed, the marginal hour is almost certainly better spent on the other half. And nobody frames it that way, because typing has a number attached and navigation does not.
