How Schools Stopped Teaching Typing

Typing used to be a subject. It had timetabled lessons, a dedicated room, an instructor, an assessment and a certificate. Then, over roughly one generation, it stopped being a subject and became an assumption — something young people would pick up because they had grown up around keyboards.

The assumption turned out to be wrong in a specific and measurable way. Growing up around keyboards produces familiarity with keyboards. It does not produce touch typing, because the mechanism that builds touch typing is not exposure.

This is an argument about why that assumption was made, why it failed, and why the failure was invisible for so long — plus an honest note about whether it still matters as much as it did.

Why it was a subject in the first place

Typing was taught formally because it was a vocational skill with an obvious economic value. A typist was a job title, the machines were expensive and specialised, and the difference between a trained and untrained operator was enormous — the untrained one could barely use the machine at all.

That framing carried into schools and stayed there while the equipment remained specialised. As long as the keyboard was something you encountered in a classroom rather than at home, formal instruction was the only route to competence, and nobody questioned whether it was needed.

What changed was not the value of the skill. It was the availability of the hardware. Once every household had a computer, the argument that students needed dedicated instruction to encounter a keyboard collapsed — and the argument for instruction had been so bound up with access that when access stopped being the problem, the whole case seemed to go with it.

The assumption that replaced it

The reasoning was that a generation growing up with computers would absorb typing the way they absorbed using a mouse. Nobody teaches mouse technique; nobody needs to.

The mouse comparison is where it went wrong, and the difference is instructive. Using a mouse well requires no positional memory — you look at the pointer, you look at the target, feedback is continuous and visual. Exposure is genuinely sufficient because the skill has no hidden component.

Touch typing does. It requires a positional map built from making predictions about where keys are and finding out when you were wrong, and looking at the keyboard prevents that map from forming, because a finger that has been aimed visually made no prediction. So exposure produces exactly what you would expect: a great deal of practice at hunt-and-peck, executed very fast by some people, with the positional map never developing. Years of use do not gradually turn into touch typing, and that is the fact the assumption got wrong.

Why nobody noticed for so long

Two things hid the outcome.

The first is that fast hunt-and-peck is genuinely fast. Someone who has typed for fifteen years with four fingers and constant glancing can hit forty or fifty words a minute, which is enough for school, enough for most jobs, and enough that neither they nor anyone watching identifies a problem. The deficiency is a ceiling rather than a floor, and ceilings are invisible until you press against them.

The second is that nobody was measuring. When typing was a subject it was assessed; once it became an assumption there was no assessment, so there was no data. A skill that everybody assumes and nobody tests can decline for a decade without any institution noticing.

Add to that a strong social expectation that young people are good with computers, which makes admitting otherwise unappealing. The result was a widely held belief with no evidence behind it and no mechanism that would have produced contrary evidence.

Then the input surface changed underneath everyone

The assumption was doubtful when it was made. What made it clearly wrong was that the devices young people actually grew up with stopped being keyboards.

A generation whose primary computing device is a phone accumulates enormous input experience, almost none of it on a physical keyboard. So the exposure argument, already resting on a flawed mechanism, lost even its premise. Students were not spending their formative years at keyboards, and arriving at university or work to find that the primary text-entry device is one they have limited experience with.

The honest counter-argument

It is worth taking seriously the case that this matters less than typing enthusiasts think.

If keyboards genuinely are becoming a specialist tool — the way shorthand did — then teaching every child to touch type is preparing them for a world that is receding. There is also the curriculum question. School time is finite and every subject is competing for it, and "we used to teach this" is not by itself an argument for teaching it again.

My honest reading is that the counter-argument is stronger than it was and still loses. Every professional context where text is produced at length still runs on physical keyboards, dictation remains poor for anything requiring precision or privacy, and generated text has increased rather than decreased the importance of precise, accurate keyboard work. But it is a genuine argument rather than one to wave away.

What the gap looks like now

The practical consequence is a generation arriving at knowledge work with two things: high confidence around computers, and a text-entry method with a ceiling they have not yet met.

That combination is awkward to address, because the confidence is warranted about everything except this, and the deficiency does not surface until the work involves sustained writing. For anyone teaching now, the useful adjustment is to stop assuming and start checking. A student who types quickly may or may not be touch typing, and the difference matters for what they can eventually do rather than for what they can do today.
