Teaching Typing in the Classroom
Teaching one person to type is a matter of sequence and patience. Teaching thirty at once is a different problem, and almost none of the available material addresses it. The advice written for individual learners assumes a learner who can go at their own pace, on their own keyboard, with an adult available whenever something goes wrong — and a classroom supplies none of those.
What a room of thirty actually presents is a spread of starting abilities wide enough that no single exercise suits more than a third of them, shared hardware that fits nobody in particular, and an assessment problem that is harder than it looks because a single timed result is mostly noise.

The spread is the defining constraint
In any class that has not been taught typing before, the range runs from students who have barely used a physical keyboard to students who already type quickly with an idiosyncratic self-taught method. Both extremes are badly served by an exercise pitched at the middle.
The beginner needs key locations and will be lost by anything assuming them. The fast self-taught student is being asked to get much slower for weeks in exchange for a benefit they cannot yet feel, which is a genuinely hard sell and the reason this group resists instruction more than any other. That resistance is not defiance; it is a rational response to a real short-term cost, and it is the same dynamic described in why typing courses fail adults.
The practical response is to differentiate by target rather than by content. Everyone works on the same key set in the same lesson; the beginner's goal is finding the keys without looking, while the fast student's goal is doing it with correct fingering at any speed. Same exercise, different success condition, no separate materials.
Hardware that fits nobody
School keyboards are adult-sized, and a room of ten-year-olds cannot reach the number row from home position without moving the whole hand. Insisting they keep their palms still produces either a stretch that is genuinely uncomfortable or a hand that learns to shift for numbers and never quite returns.
The honest accommodation is to accept a deliberate hand movement for the number row at that age and to defer numbers until the letters are secure — which is where the practice path puts them anyway. What matters is that the movement is deliberate and returns to home, rather than being an unnoticed drift.
Shared machines create a second problem: whatever a student sets up is gone next lesson. That makes anything requiring configuration — a layout change, a personalised setting — impractical, and it makes the F and J bumps more important, since they are the one positional aid that is present on every keyboard in the room regardless of who used it last. Teaching students to find home by touching those bumps before typing anything is the single most transferable habit available.
Why one timed result tells you almost nothing
The obvious assessment is a timed test, and a single one is close to useless for a young learner. The variance between attempts is large, the effect of a lucky or unlucky passage is substantial, and a nervous student's first attempt bears little relation to their ability.
The measurement problems compound at short durations. A short window amplifies the effect of a single fumbled word, so a fifteen- or thirty-second result on a beginner is mostly noise. A longer test gives a steadier figure but demands sustained attention that is itself being assessed, which confounds it differently.
The more informative assessments are the ones that do not produce a single number. Whether a student can find home position without looking. Whether they use the correct finger for a given key. Whether their hands return after a reach. Those are observable directly by walking the room, they are what the instruction is actually teaching, and they cannot be faked by a lucky passage.
If a number is required — and it usually is — take several attempts across different days and use the trend rather than the best, since the best result is a selection effect rather than a measurement.
The no-looking problem, in a room
Every student will look at the keys, and the individual advice — cover the keyboard, raise the screen — is harder to apply to thirty people at once.
What works in a room is the cheap physical version: a sheet of paper or card resting over the hands, which costs nothing, works on any keyboard, and is visible from across the room so you can see at a glance who has removed theirs.
What does not work is instructing students not to look and expecting compliance. Looking down genuinely helps in the moment, which is why the habit is so persistent, and asking someone to resist a behaviour that is currently working is a poor use of their attention. The accompanying expectation to set is that accuracy will get worse before it gets better. If that is not said in advance, the drop is read as failure by exactly the students who were doing the right thing.
Session length and what to do inside one
Short and frequent beats long and occasional at every age, and more so with children, whose attention for repetitive practice is limited and whose technique degrades quickly once it goes.
Ten to fifteen minutes of actual typing within a lesson is a reasonable target, and the remainder is better spent on demonstration, checking positions and explanation than on more repetitions. A student typing badly for twenty minutes is rehearsing the bad version, which is worse than stopping.
Within those minutes, the shape that works is a short warm-up on something already familiar, then one new thing, then a short unpressured run. Introducing more than one new key group in a session reliably produces confusion rather than faster progress.
And for the same reason the individual guidance gives, ending while it is still going well matters — a class that finishes on a clean run comes back more willingly than one that finishes tired.
What to do about the fast self-taught student
This student is the hardest case and deserves a direct answer rather than a policy.
They are usually genuinely faster than the class, sometimes faster than the teacher, using two to four fingers and looking down. Asking them to restart from home position means asking them to be visibly worse than their classmates for weeks, in public, with no immediate reward. Many refuse, and the refusal is reasonable on the information they have.
Two things help. The first is an honest account of the ceiling: a self-taught method that requires looking down has an upper bound, and describing where that bound comes from — the visual lookup loop, not their fingers — is more persuasive than an assertion that the standard method is better.
The second is a private target rather than a public one. Working on correct fingering during independent practice, with their existing method reserved for anything that matters, removes the public cost that is doing most of the resisting. It is slower than a clean switch and considerably faster than a refusal.
