A single capital at the start of a word asks for one clean tap-and-release of shift timed against a single letter. An acronym like NASA asks for something else entirely: shift held down across four consecutive letters and released only once, rather than tapped and released for a single letter the way a normal capital works.

This test exists to make shift release timing visible, since it's one of the only keys most typists have never consciously practiced — everyone learns where the letters are, but almost nobody drills exactly when to let go of shift after a run of capitals.

How This Test Works

A minute's passage typically covers two or three of the pool's six sentences, each built around real institutional names and acronyms — the NHS, HM Coastguard, a CSV file sent to IT — so there's rarely more than a few words between one capital-heavy stretch and the next.

What this test surfaces that a plain sentence rarely does is a stray, unwanted capital landing where it shouldn't — releasing shift a fraction of a second late after an acronym, so the next lowercase letter comes out capitalized too, or releasing it early so the last letter of an acronym drops to lowercase. Both are shift-timing errors rather than letter-location mistakes, and they show up in your error count the same way any other mistake does.
