NASA, HTML, PDF and USB are all typed the same way: Shift held down through every letter, then released once. That's a different action from capitalising a single letter, where Shift is pressed and released almost immediately — holding it across three or four letters in a row turns what's normally a quick, tapped motion into a short stretch of sustained tension, more like holding a note than striking one.

Caps Lock offers an alternative for exactly this situation, and for something this short it's usually the worse option. Turning it on is a deliberate keystroke before the acronym starts; turning it off is a second deliberate keystroke afterward, easy to forget precisely because the burst it was covering was so brief. Held Shift doesn't have that failure mode — releasing it happens as a natural part of finishing the word, not as a separate decision a typist has to remember to make a moment later.

Acronyms rarely sit in isolation, too. "Convert the file to PDF before sending" drops a four-letter capital run into the middle of an otherwise lowercase sentence, which asks for something neither an all-lowercase passage nor an all-caps one ever demands: engaging Shift mid-flow, holding it briefly, and releasing straight back into ordinary typing without breaking stride either side of it.

Why This Drill

A tapped Shift and a held Shift are different physical actions, not just different durations of the same one — holding requires the finger to stay under tension across several keystrokes instead of springing back immediately, and releasing it a beat early or late clips a letter at either end of the run. This drill's passage is built entirely from short, real acronyms so that sustained-hold discipline gets repeated on its own, rather than showing up once or twice inside a longer passage where it's easy to rush without noticing.

The comparison with Caps Lock matters most for exactly the length these acronyms are. A long document written entirely in capitals might genuinely justify the toggle, since the two extra keystrokes are a one-time cost against a long stretch of text. A three- or four-letter acronym never earns that trade — the toggle-on and toggle-off keystrokes cost more, relative to the word itself, than simply holding Shift for the same brief span ever would.

Holding Shift Is a Different Motion From Tapping It

A single capitalised letter needs Shift down for a fraction of a second before the letter fires and up again almost immediately after. A four-letter acronym needs that same key held through the entire word, released only once at the end — the finger doing the holding is under continuous tension rather than a quick, springy tap, which is a genuinely different physical task even though it's the identical key.

Why Caps Lock Loses for Something This Short

Caps Lock trades a held key for two separate toggles — one to turn it on before the run starts, one to turn it off after. For a long stretch of capitals that trade can be worth it. For a three- or four-letter acronym, the two toggles cost more relative to the word than simply holding Shift the whole time, and forgetting the second toggle is a common, easy mistake precisely because the capitalised stretch it was covering ends so quickly.

An Acronym Buried Inside an Ordinary Sentence

"Convert the file to PDF before sending" spends most of its length in plain lowercase, with one short capitalised burst in the middle. That's a different demand from either a fully lowercase passage or a fully capitalised one: Shift has to engage mid-sentence, hold for exactly the acronym's length, and release cleanly back into lowercase without disturbing the words on either side of it.
