This site's own WPM standard treats every five characters, spaces included, as one unit of measurement — a fair proxy precisely because the space bar is pressed about as often as any other single character across ordinary prose. No other key on the board is struck that consistently, and no other key is worked by a digit that never has to leave its resting position to reach it. The thumbs sit on the space bar (or just below it) through an entire session, never assigned to a letter, never asked to travel.

That combination — the single most-pressed key, worked by the one digit that's already there — is exactly why it gets almost no deliberate practice anywhere. Every other key on this hub has a drill built around finding and returning to it. The space bar never leaves, so nobody thinks to check whether it's being struck at the right moment relative to everything else happening in the hands.

Timing is the actual skill here, not placement. A thumb that presses fractionally late, after the next letter's keystroke has already started, can let two words run together with no gap between them; a thumb that presses fractionally early can drop a space into the middle of a word that was supposed to stay whole. Neither error announces itself the way a wrong letter does — the keys pressed were all correct, just not in the right order relative to each other.

Why This Drill

Because both thumbs rest within reach of the space bar at all times, which one actually presses it on a given word is a real, standing choice rather than something forced by hand position the way most other keys are. Some typists settle on one dominant thumb for every space; others let whichever hand just finished its word supply the next press, so the space arrives as a natural continuation of the motion that was already happening rather than a separate action layered on top of it. Neither approach is enforced by the keyboard itself — it's a habit that forms early and then goes completely unexamined.

This drill's passage is built from short, common words and phrases specifically so the spacing between them, rather than the words themselves, is what a typist has room to notice. With nothing difficult to spell out, whatever rhythm problem exists between a word ending and the next one starting has nowhere to hide behind a harder reach elsewhere in the sentence.

The One Key Every Word Touches

A letter key's frequency depends on which letters a given passage happens to use; the space bar's doesn't. It's struck once per word regardless of vocabulary, which is why this site's own scoring standard folds it into the same five-character unit as ordinary letters rather than treating it as a separate, minor character.

A Digit That Never Learns a New Position

The thumb doesn't reach anywhere — it rests on or near the space bar for the entire session, which means it never needs to relearn its position the way a finger recovering from a stretch to a number or symbol does. That constancy is also why nobody ever isolates it for practice: there's no return trip to get wrong.

When the Press Lands Matters More Than Which Thumb Presses It

A press that arrives slightly late, after the next word's first letter has already fired, produces a run-together pair of words with no space between them; a press that arrives slightly early plants a space before the current word is actually finished, splitting it in two. Both are timing failures relative to the surrounding keystrokes, not failures of the thumb itself.

Left, Right, or Whichever Hand Just Finished

Some typists commit to a single thumb for every space bar press regardless of what came before it; others let the hand that just typed the final letter of a word supply the next space, so the motion continues rather than switching hands mid-gesture. Both are legitimate, consistent choices — what causes trouble is switching between the two without noticing, which breaks whatever rhythm either approach was providing.
