Every other finger-family drill on this hub has to reach for something: the pinky stretches for Tab and Enter, the index covers two full columns, the ring finger drags against a neighbour. The middle finger does none of that. On the left hand it owns exactly one key per row — E on top, D at home, C on the bottom — and the right hand mirrors it with I, K, and comma. No lateral reach, no boundary dispute with the other hand, nothing obvious to point at. That tidiness is the reason this finger has gone forty-seven drills without one of its own.
The column looks too simple to bother isolating, and for most of an ordinary session it is — until the letter sitting at the top of it gets counted. E leads English letter frequency outright, and I sits well up the same list. A finger with the smallest, cleanest key set on the board is, by raw keystroke volume, doing some of the heaviest work of any finger on either hand.

Under speed, a hand that hesitates on a ring-finger key — S on the left, L on the right — can let the stronger, closer middle finger's motion carry part of that reach instead of the ring finger completing it alone. The correct letter still lands, so nothing about the sentence looks wrong, and that's exactly why the habit survives for years: the middle finger quietly absorbs the slack, and the ring finger is never forced to build the independent control it would need without that help.
Because E and I fall to this same finger and turn up in such a large share of ordinary text, a small, consistent looseness here — landing half a key off centre on D or K rather than missing the reach outright — repeats across far more keystrokes than an equivalent looseness would on almost any other finger. The Letter Doing More Work Than Its Column Suggests
E is the single most common letter in English, and I is one of the small set of vowels that carries a comparable share of ordinary text. D, K and comma fill out the rest of the column at a steadier, lower rate. Set that against a finger like the left pinky, whose key set mixes genuinely rare letters in with common ones, and the middle finger's profile looks almost the opposite: nothing rare on it, several keys firing constantly.
Where the Slack Actually Goes
Type a fast run of home-row words and pay attention to the ring finger rather than the screen — on many hands it barely separates from the middle finger's motion, especially reaching for S or L.
