Only the dollar sign has a key of its own on a US layout. The page below explains how each of the others is actually produced, which is part of the point of the drill.

$, £, €, ¥ and ¢ all mean the same thing in principle — a unit of money — but only one of them sits on a standard US keyboard as its own key. The dollar sign is Shift plus 4, reachable in a single motion the Currency & Price Drill already covers in depth. The other four aren't printed on the keyboard at all, so producing them isn't a question of which finger reaches which key — it's a question of which input method the operating system offers, and that answer changes depending on what a typist is actually sitting in front of.

On Windows, each of the missing four has a numeric code that works in most text fields: hold Alt and type 0163 on the numeric keypad for £, 0128 for €, 0165 for ¥, or 0162 for ¢, then release Alt. That code has to be entered on the physical number pad rather than the top digit row, so a laptop without one needs an on-screen keypad or the emoji panel (Windows key plus period, which also opens a symbols tab) instead.

macOS reaches the same four symbols through the Option key, but as a single chord rather than a multi-digit code: Option plus 3 produces £, Option plus 4 produces ¢, Option plus Y produces ¥, and € needs Option and Shift held together with 2. Linux desktops that have a compose key configured use yet another method — a short sequence like Compose, C, = for € or Compose, L, hyphen for £ — though whether a compose key is available at all depends on how that particular system has been set up.

Why This Drill

A typist who writes prices for an international audience runs into these symbols constantly — a UK price list, a European invoice, a product page selling into Japan — and the obstacle usually isn't finger placement at all, it's not knowing offhand which of three or four completely different mechanisms applies to the machine currently in front of them. That's a different kind of practice from most of this site's drills, which train a motion; this one is closer to memorising a small reference table.

The pound sign has a genuine shortcut worth knowing: keyboards sold for the UK market print £ directly on the 3 key, accessed with an ordinary Shift press exactly the way ! or @ are reached on a US layout, and many of the same keyboards also print a small € on the 4 key for use with AltGr. A typist working on that specific hardware doesn't need an Alt code or a compose sequence at all — the Keyboard Layouts Explained guide covers this kind of physical difference between national layouts in more depth.

None of the four methods above transfer to each other. Learning the Windows Alt codes doesn't help on a Mac, and a compose-key sequence memorised on Linux does nothing on either. That's the actual content of this drill — not a single motion to repeat until it's automatic, but a small set of facts worth having on hand the next time one of these symbols is needed and the dollar sign won't do.

The One Symbol With a Key of Its Own

$ is Shift plus 4 on every standard US keyboard, the same reach the Currency & Price Drill and the Shifted Top Row Drill already train as part of the ordinary number-row set. £, €, ¥ and ¢ have no equivalent key at all on that same layout — not a harder reach, but no reach whatsoever, which is why this drill is about method rather than motion for four of its five characters.

Windows: A Code Typed on the Number Pad, Not the Number Row

Alt+0163, Alt+0128, Alt+0165 and Alt+0162 produce £, €, ¥ and ¢ respectively, but only when the digits are entered on a physical numeric keypad — the same one-hand grid the Numeric Keypad Drill covers — rather than the row of digits above the letters. On a laptop without that keypad, the emoji panel opened with the Windows key and a period offers the same symbols through its symbols tab without needing the code at all.

macOS: A Held Combination, Not a Sequence

Option plus 3 for £, Option plus 4 for ¢ and Option plus Y for ¥ are each a single chord, pressed and released together the way Shift plus a letter produces a capital. € is the odd one out, needing Option, Shift and 2 held at once rather than Option paired with a single other key — a small inconsistency in an otherwise uniform pattern.

A Dedicated Key on One Layout, a Compose Sequence on Another

A UK keyboard's 3 key already carries £ where a US keyboard carries #, so Shift plus 3 reaches it directly with no code or combination needed. A Linux desktop with a compose key configured instead uses a short two-character sequence after pressing Compose — a completely different mechanism from either the American or the British approach, and one that depends entirely on whether that key has been set up on the machine in question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the dollar sign so much easier to produce than the other four symbols in this drill?
