Key Hunt draws from forty possible characters: the twenty-six letters, the ten digits, and four punctuation marks — comma, period, semicolon, apostrophe. Each round shows exactly one of them, chosen independently of whatever came before, and asks for nothing more than that single character. There are thirty rounds per session, and the result screen reports hits, misses, and total time once the thirtieth is done.
Every other passage on this site, generated or authored, is built from real words, which means the next character is rarely a total surprise — a familiar sequence lets your hands start moving before your eyes have fully processed what's coming. Key Hunt removes that entirely. With no word shape and no preceding letters to draw on, each round is answered from nothing but knowing, in isolation, where that one character actually sits.
The forty characters are drawn with equal likelihood, so Q and Z show up exactly as often, over enough rounds, as E and T — a distribution nothing else on the site uses, since ordinary English text is heavily weighted toward a handful of common letters. Digits and punctuation get the same billing as letters too, which matters because a normal paragraph asks for a semicolon or a digit far less often than it asks for a vowel.
How to Play
Press the character shown, on a keyboard or through the on-screen input — a hit or miss is recorded instantly and the next character appears immediately, with no pause between rounds. On a touch device, the same single keystroke is read from the input's value changing, the identical approach the rest of the site uses for soft keyboards that don't produce reliable key-press events.
There's no ramp within a session — round one and round thirty draw from the exact same forty-character set with the same equal odds, so nothing about the game itself gets objectively harder as you go. Whatever gets harder is whichever specific characters happen to come up, since a stretch of rare punctuation back to back will feel tougher than a stretch of common letters, purely by chance rather than by design.
A miss simply moves on to the next round rather than asking you to correct anything — there's nothing to fix here, since a wrong character was never part of a longer piece of text to begin with.
