A date in this drill shows up in two different shapes carrying the same information in reverse order: 24/12/1994 puts the day first and separates each part with a slash, while 2005-05-05 puts the year first and separates with a hyphen. Nothing about the underlying date changes between the two formats — only the order of the fields and the character sitting between them. A time like 22:42 adds a third separator, the colon, on a format that never reorders anything since hours only ever precede minutes.

All three separators — slash, hyphen and colon — are reached by the right pinky, whichever format is in front of you. The digits around them move between hands and fingers depending on their value, but the punctuation holding a date or time together never changes fingers, which isn't true of the six dedicated punctuation drills, where different marks belong to different parts of the hand.

Every field in every format here is a fixed length: two digits for a day or month, four for a year, two for an hour or minute, padded with a leading zero when the value itself is smaller — 01/01/2001, 00:00. That fixed shape is what lets a typist commit to the whole pattern in advance rather than reading it one character at a time.

Why This Drill

Because a date or time's shape never changes — always this many digits, always this separator in this position — a hand that's typed enough of them can predict the whole sequence before finishing it, the same kind of commitment the Apostrophe & Contraction Drill describes for the fixed n't ending. That predictability is also why an error here is usually a transposition — 24/12/1994 typed as 24/21/1994 — rather than a wrong key: the hand knew the shape and the digit count in advance, and simply produced two of the right digits in the wrong order.

The reverse-order formats matter more than they look. 24/12/1994 and 2005-05-05 encode a date the same way logically, but a typist switching between the two mid-passage has to remember which field comes first as well as which separator connects them, so the two formats can't be handled by one motor habit — each is its own shape sharing the same underlying content.

Since slash, hyphen and colon are all right-pinky work regardless of format, the finger that handles the punctuation never has to change no matter which shape a given date takes — only the digits flowing around it shift hands and fingers depending on their value. That consistency isn't shared by ordinary prose, where a typist's punctuation fingers vary constantly from one mark to the next.

Same Date, Two Field Orders, Two Separators

24/12/1994 leads with the day and separates with a slash; 2005-05-05 leads with the year and separates with a hyphen. Both describe a real calendar date, but a typist has no way to predict, from the digits alone, which order is coming — the format itself has to be recognised first, before the hand can commit to which field arrives next.

One Finger Owns Every Separator

Slash, hyphen and colon are all reached by the right pinky, the identical finger the Hyphen & Dash Drill and Semicolon & Colon Drill each isolate separately for their own reasons. In a date or time, that finger's job never changes even as the format around it does — only the digits on either side of each separator move between hands depending on their value.

Why the Error Here Is a Swap, Not a Miss

Because every field's length is fixed and known in advance, a typist can commit to the whole shape of a date or time before finishing it, which is what makes a mistyped one usually come out as two digits swapped in place rather than a wrong key hit entirely. That's a different failure mode from an arbitrary code like the ones in the Mixed Alphanumeric Drill, where there's no fixed shape to commit to and a miss is more likely to be a genuinely wrong character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do dates in this drill sometimes go day-month-year and sometimes year-month-day?

Both orders are common in real writing — day-first with slashes, year-first with hyphens — and this drill mixes them so a typist practises recognising which format is coming rather than assuming every date follows the same field order.

Why is the hyphen used for one date format and the slash for another?

That's simply the convention each format follows in ordinary use. Mechanically both separators are reached by the same right pinky, so the choice between them doesn't change which finger is doing the work.

Is the colon in a time like 14:51 typed with the same finger as a colon in an ordinary sentence?

Yes — colon is always Shift plus the semicolon key, whether it's separating hours from minutes or introducing a list in a sentence.

Why does a typo in a date usually swap two digits instead of producing a wrong character?

Because the format's length and shape are fixed and predictable, the hand commits to the whole pattern in advance. An error under those conditions tends to be a sequencing slip — two digits landing in reverse order — rather than the finger missing its target entirely.
